Bengaluru
With
a huge internal market and a long entrepreneurial history, Bengaluru
tops the list of most desired places for starting a business in India.
Widely acclaimed as an innovation base with the success stories of
leading technology companies, the Silicon Valley of India has a lineup
of public and private institutions that are ready to invest in startups.
Not to mention, the city has some of the top ranking educational
establishments like IIT and IIM, tendering an asset of industrial talent
for budding ventures. With not many unfavorable factors other than the
awful traffic, the city is one ideal place for aspiring entrepreneurs to
build their nest.
Delhi NCR
With
an erstwhile business tradition, the capital city is home to diverse
enterprise groups and a preferred source for procurement of raw
materials. Furthermore the industrial expansion is taking place at a
rapid pace accrediting the surrounding places like Noida and Gurgaon as
business hubs; predominantly due to lower rental costs and extensive
consumer bases in these cities. The ecosystem compared to others is
supportive in terms of both ease of doing business and funding (with
some leading VCs) from the startup perspective.
Mumbai
As
the financial capital of India, Mumbai undeniably has an advantage over
others when it comes to entrepreneurship. This richest city of India is
amongst world’s top ten centers of commerce. Considering the
Infrastructural merits and connectivity, the suburbs of Andheri and
Goregaon are pretty good options for startups along with areas like
Jogeshwari and Powai. Startups incubated by SINE (Society for Innovation
and Entrepreneurship) may find an attractive spot inside the IIT campus
itself.
Chennai
Famed
as ‘Detroit of India’ for the auto manufacturing activities, the city
now opens doors to other industries such as Software and BPOs. Some big
market players in the automobile space with manufacturing plants in
Chennai include Ford, BMW, Hyundai and Mitsubishi. World Bank, Abu Dhabi
Commercial Bank and Royal Bank of Scotland are among the financial
institutions who established their offices in the city. Chennai falls
behind Bangalore and Mumbai concerning investor funding, which may be
negated with the rising number of incubation centers.
Hyderabad
The
pearl city of India contributes around 8 percent to the overall startup
activity in the country. Even though the separation of Telangana from
Andhra has resulted in the base shifting of many startup firms, the city
is still home to some of the giant MNCs like Facebook, TCS (Tata
Consultancy Services), Infosys and Microsoft. With the highest number of
SEZs (Special Economic Zones) Hyderabad is emerging as a breeding
ground for budding enterprises.
Ahmedabad
Ranked
as the largest exporter of jewelry in India, Ahmedabad is a city with a
pro start up culture. The city’s oldest incubator at the Indian
Institute of Ahmedabad, CIEE has a proven track record of supporting
over 100 startup companies. The liberal business policies by the State
Government are indeed one of the factors driving startups in this city.
Pune
Pune
has a thriving startup ecosystem with companies focusing primarily on
education, marketing and e-commerce. Pune accommodates some of the
reputed Engineering colleges of Maharashtra and also, hiring
professionals is cheaper in this city as compared to Bengaluru or
Mumbai. Renting an office space at an affordable price is what attracts
most of the aspirants towards this city.
Kochi
The
Queen of Arabian Sea, Kochi has more to offer than its amazing beaches
and architectural marvels. With the launch of public-private partnership
incubator ‘Startup Village (SV)’ Kochi became the subject of many
newcomers in the entrepreneurial sector. SV is considered as the best
incubator project till date and identical podium has been instituted in
other parts of the country as well.
Chandigarh
Chandigarh
has a long association with entrepreneurship and is home to India’s
first private sector incubator Morpheus, which gave room for 82 startup
companies till its shutdown last year. The city along with its
neighboring places like Mohali and Panchkula are the operational centers
for companies like Dell, IBM and Infosys. Government is also extracting
the full potential of the Rajiv Gandhi Tech Park that was set up with
the aim to transform Chandigarh into an IT hub.
Kolkata
Earlier
Kolkata was never a preferred option for startups in India but now a
handful of IT entrepreneurs are trying to change the scenario. The
co-working space in Saltlake known as the NASSCOM Warehouse is
partnering with the state government to attract young business ventures.
The absence of a strong investor base is the only setback for the
city’s growth.
Visakhpatnam
Developing Visakhapatnam as a Smart City by Government of India
under 100 Smart Cities Project, Government of Andhra Pradesh with the
help of Government of United States of America (USA), Department of
Commerce, United States Trade Development Agency (USTDA) and United
States Exim Bank.
The aim
of the Mission Smart City is to efficiently utilise the available
Assets, Resources and Infrastructure to enhance the quality of Urban
Life and provide a clean and sustainable environment for living and the
main focus will be on core infrastructure services like adequate clean
Water supply, Power supply, Sanitation, Disaster Management, Solid waste
management, Waste water treatment, Efficient urban mobility and Public
Transportation, Public Healthcare system, Education, Affordable Housing,
